This trio had come about as a kind of “rehearsal trio” to kick around a lot of ideas and try out new music. After playing together for several years, Rich organized this recording to document a lot of the music he’d been writing and arranging with the piano in mind.
There’s a lot of shifting gears going on in this music, and the CD is really designed to be listened to all the way through. It reflects a lot of the changes one experiences when traveling far and wide, arriving at one destination only to head off towards another, until home is everywhere you’ve ever been.
“Volume 1: Flying Saucers” is the first of two trio recordings by these artists. The album consists of original music by Joe and Rich, two standards arranged by Rich, and a tune by Bill Evans, “Time Remembered”.
The musicians on these two CD’s have known each other for over thirty years, and have been playing regularly as a trio since 2002/3. They have played on George Grahams “Homegrown Music” program at WVIA, and also have appeared at The Deer Head Inn.

“Volume 2: How Deep Is The Ocean” is the second of two trio recordings by these artists. The album consists of original music by Joe and Rich, the tunes “Virgo” by Wayne Shorter, “Time Remembered (take 2) by Bill Evans, “Ramblin” by Ornette Coleman, and of course, the standard “How Deep Is The Ocean” by Irving Berlin.
The musicians on these two CD’s have known each other for over thirty years, and have been playing regularly as a trio since 2002/3. They have played on George Grahams “Homegrown Music” program at WVIA, and also have appeared at The Deer Head Inn.

The term “diablo en musica”, or literally, “devil in music”, refers to the interval of the tri-tone, an interval which was actually banned by the Church in the middle ages.
With the exception of the Epilogue, “Last Man Out” (composed by bassist Rich Messbauer), all the music on this recording was freely improvised, with no rehearsal whatsoever.
It is organized into suites designed to stand alone, the first consisting of solos, duos, and trios, and the second consisting entirely of trios.

All composed by “Mondongo” Jim Messbauer, except “At Ease” by Abe, Jim and Rich.
This band originated from a desire of bassist Rich Messbauer to absorb some of the possibilities of latin, groove oriented music which his younger brother Jim, (aka “Mondongo”) had been swimming in for 25 years.
Playing with this combination was such a gas that Rich eventually convinced his brother Jim to go into the studio and see what would happen. Jim, who is also a prolific composer and arranger, quickly wrote a number of charts and convinced his friend Abe of the band “Zemog”, to come out to PA and spend a coupe of days in the studio.
The title “Newark Man” refers to their father, Bill Messbauer, who was referred to as “Newark Man” in the newspapers’ wedding announcement of the marriage of their parents. This CD is dedicated to the memory of Bill and Dolores Messbauer.

Jed and Rich had known each other since High School in Bridgewater, New Jersey, and had often talked about putting together a project such as this. With drummer Jeff Brillinger on board, the three of them got together one afternoon in the studio and played some standards and a blues. There was no rehearsal, and this was the first time the three of them played together.
“Rehearse, get worse”
Rich took that cover photo out the window of a flight coming in from Singapore, via Tokyo and San Francisco.
